How To Tell When Employee Morale Is Suffering

It’s not easy to identify unsatisfied employees by just looking at them. The signs of dissatisfaction and low morale are subtler. Nevertheless, there are some familiar trends among the unsatisfied employees that signify they might have a problem which needs to be addressed. Unhappy employees would affect the organization’s image negatively.

Warning: In several cases, unsatisfied employees prove to be a forerunner of workplace violence. Management and staff must be trained to identify warning signs that may lead to violence such as explicit hostility, threats, and property destruction. Always encourage the employees that such behaviour should be instantaneously reported to the management in search of better HR solutions.

Complaints: Lack of concentration and erroneous work affects customers and co-workers. Increasing customer complains would highlight problems concerning a specific employee or group of employees. An employee may be facing impractical expectations, workload or may need additional training. The organization must tackle the reasons for complaints before it starts losing its customers.

Attitude: An employee’s bad attitude is clearly visible from frequent arguments, complaints, and poor customer service. Everyone has their good and bad days, but persistent resentment and temper tantrums can affect the whole work environment negatively. Any employee who does not follow instructions or repudiate requests from the boss is not a happy employee. Top management must immediately resolve problems that form the basis for poor attitude before it spreads in the organization.

Turnover: People often switch jobs to progress in their careers, but employees quitting jobs in groups indicate the high level of dissatisfaction at work. For instance, if an individual at a senior position abruptly resigns, the same is a signal that something is wrong within the organization. Organizations must conduct exit interviews to know the reason why employees are leaving their jobs and if there is any room for improvement.

Quality of Work: Employee productivity is an excellent measure which reveals employee satisfaction. If an employee’s productivity radically declines, it may be a sign of dissatisfaction and discontentment. It can be due to a personal problem or problem with a co-worker, so it’s extremely important to find out where the problem lies. Consistent errors, careless work, and low output are not only signs of an unhappy employee rather they can also affect an organization’s bottom line and its range of    HR solutions.

Attendance: Regularly coming late, long lunch breaks and high absenteeism are few common habits of unsatisfied employees and often result in low productivity. Low morale spreads and frustration increases when other employees have to fill in for absent co-workers. Attendance issues sometimes signify that the employee is dealing with important personal problems rather than work-related issues, so good communication (preferably a two-way communication) is the only solution to discover where the problems exist.
